Drafting

In professional sports, Drafting plays a very important role in determining who to invest in as a potential contributor to a team’s success or particularly, a future Super Star.

General Managers and coaches commonly select draft choices based on the performance record of young athletes and a subjective assessment of performance potential.

However, those involved in the draft selection process are at a disadvantage in that they do not have the tools to identify the potential of draftees and when they are likely to peak in performance. While they are able to evaluate the athlete’s present technical and tactical skills very well, they often are unable to predict their future skills and the ability to utilize those skills at the advanced level required for professional sports. It is well known, for example, that in the NHL, many “top drafts” never play a professional game. In fact, many realize their peak performance level at the age of 18-19, after which they are unable to progress any further.

Having knowledge of an athlete’s potential progress may suggest for example that draft # 63 has a much higher potential for future success than draft #1. Although draft #63 may demonstrate lower skills at the present time, he or she may have the potential to advance 2 or 3 times more than draft #1, who is at peak performance today.

Character Assessment is a powerful tool to improve the quality of draft selections. Equipped with a comprehensive, scientific and objective knowledge of an athlete’s potential, professional clubs are able to make informed business decisions and reduce costly risks associated with the draft selection process.
